On My "To See" list

I never read the book, but this looks like such a fun adventure. And who doesn't love Julia Roberts. In an era of Kardashians and Lohans and Speidis, Julia is still a Movie Star.

Thursday Recipe

I think we entered day 10 of 100+ degree heat here in the DFW, so when I came across this recipe today all I could think was, "this sounds so refreshing!" I grew up with lemon slush - Del's lemonade is a rite of passage in Rhode Island (although I discovered today that it can actually be found in 36 states - who knew? I bet they're run by Rhode Islanders). This recipe from Sunny Anderson made me think of that sweet summer treat.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup lime juice

Directions

Fill a large bowl with ice water. Place another bowl inside so it's surrounded on all sides by the ice water. In a medium saucepan, bring water and sugar to a boil. When sugar has dissolved, remove from heat and add lime juice. Pour into bowl sitting in the ice bath to cool lime mixture, about 15 minutes. Pour mixture into a 10 by 12-inch baking dish that's sitting on a sheet tray and put in the freezer. After 1 1/2 hours, remove from freezer and scrape the ice with a fork, being sure to mix the softer center with the more frozen outer edges. Put back into the freezer for another 1 1/2 hours. Before serving, scrape again using the fork.

Saturday Daybook

Outside my window …the sun is blazing - it is hotter than Hades.

I am thinking … that today was pretty productive.

I am thankful for … central air conditioning. The heat is incredible at times.

I am reading Until the Twelfth of Never. True Crime, kind of sad.

I am hoping … that we're doing what I think we're doing next weekend.

On my mind … thinking about ideas for the Mancone Family Reunion.

I'm learning … that I don't miss the computer. I spend far less time on my laptop than I used to. I think it's the whole Central Time thing.

Noticing that … it is time to take Jack to have his claws trimmed.

From the kitchen … nothing actually, got sushi takeout for dinner. Yum!

Around the house … time to buy a dining table.

One of my favorite things … General Hospital. Brenda's back this week!!!

Thursday Recipe

A quick and easy one this week. One of my favorite summer foods is corn on the cob. When I was younger, I remember my mom stopping on the side of the road and buying fresh ears of corn from a local farmer. I saw this recipe from the food network for corn on the cob. Usually I am a traditionalist when it comes to my corn on the cob - just butter and salt. The sweetness really comes through that way. But this recipe looks to good to pass up.

Directions

Bring 2 cups water, 1 cup milk and a pinch of salt to a boil in a pot. Cut 4 ears corn into thirds; add to the pot and cook until crisp-tender, 5 minutes, then drain. In the same pot, melt 4 tablespoons butter with 2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning, a dash of green hot sauce and some salt. Toss the corn in the spicy butter.
