Every region has its comfort food. In the South where I currently reside, it's fried chicken, grits, sweet tea, and red velvet cake. When I lived in Louisiana it was red beans and sausage, jambalaya, gumbo, and pecan pie. Comfort food warms your soul - it warms your very being from the inside out. It's not just about indulging in something that is not so good for you, it's about the memories the food evokes, the fondness for the region, and shared experience you get from eating it. For me, one of the comfort foods of New England is New England Clam Chowder. Not Manhattan, not Corn, not Seafood. No, this chowder is thick, white, and creamy, with cubes of potatoes and pieces of clam. I had some for lunch today, with oyster crackers of course and a little bit of salt and pepper. It was heavenly. Saying it warmed my soul would be an understatement. It did nothing to stem the wave of homesickness I've been feeling lately, but it did make me feel connected to my roots here in New England, and that made me happy.
