Happy Wednesday Friends! It's a short week for me at work because of the July 4th Holiday - yay! Anyone else looking forward to the long weekend?
Way back in March, I made a trip to the library and grabbed four books to read. Who knew my timing would be so perfect as they closed the next day due to COVID? The first few weeks of COVID I could not focus enough to read. Since then though, I finished three of the books I checked out and am working my way through the fourth. If Henry naps well this weekend, I may be able to finish that one. I'm listing them here, including another book I finished back in February that was a fascinating read and another that was an impulse buy by one of my favorite authors.
This was the book I finished back in February. It was fascinating. I became interested in the story after I read a magazine article about Anna Delvey and when I saw the book I knew I wanted to read more.
The Flatshare was such a fun read. The premise is great - two people sharing a one bedroom flat because they work completely opposite schedules and they communicate via post-it note. A fun, quirky read with characters you want to root for. This would be a great poolside read.
I love anything by Lisa Jewell - hence the impulse buy. She writes such gripping stories. Most are thrillers, this one is very interesting. More twisty than thriller, but still a great read. Others that I have loved from her include Watching You and The Family Upstairs. Some of the characters you will like and others you probably won't, but you still want to find out how it all turns out. Jewell is excellent at crafting a story that keeps you turning the page and wanting more.
If you liked Me Before You, you should pick up My Oxford Year. Especially if you are an Anglophile. Or like books set at Oxford. Or really just want a good love story. I thought it was a little slow to start, but then it picked up and I couldn't put it down.
Daisy Jones & The Six may be my book of the year. I know this was on everyone's list last year and I finally got to it this year. Y'all, this was so well done. It is written like an oral history, almost like you would have read it in Rolling Stone. It's about a band in the 60s and 70s and their rise and all the interpersonal things that happen in a band. Even in the way it was written, the character development is so good. I could not put it down and I think I finished it in about a week (which is fast for me nowadays).
An impulse pick up from the library, I grabbed this one because this is another author I really enjoy. I'm only a little bit into it, but it's thrilling already. Bohjalian is another one who crafts great characters and amazing plot twists. One of my all time favorite books is Midwives and I am always up to pick up one of his books. This one is about a bachelor party that goes very very wrong. The party is one small aspect of the book, so don't get hung up on that detail. It's all about the people.
